Life's good in Cairns. It’s great hanging out on the campus with lots of people from all over the world. It’s not hard to make friends here, once you say hello to people they open up to you and be friendly and want to hang out. There are lots of beaches and beautiful restaurants and cafes, I like to go out and have dinner or have barbeques on the beach and go swimming. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Placement

Vocational Placement is an essential component of this qualification. Students will undertake 200 placement hours in an aged care facility organised by TAFE Queensland. This placement will take place after the successful completion of class room activities and prescribed assessments. Students will be required to work the shifts determined by the placement provider and these will include mornings (commencing at 6am), evenings (finishing at 11pm) and possibly some night shifts between Monday and Sunday. Students are expected to have in place strategies to manage family and work commitments in order to meet vocational placement shifts. The vocational placement may be within any aged care facility within the South East Queensland corner and may include holiday periods.  Students will continue to be assessed against prescribed units of competency undertaken during their vocational placement.  If their assessment results are unsatisfactory they will be deemed not competent against those prescribed units.

Prior to commencement of Vocational Placement students are required to organise and complete an Australian Federal Police Check. Students must obtain the Check to go on Placement and be able to complete the qualification. For students working within Queensland Health, as well as a police check you will also be required to obtain a Positive Notice for Child Related Employment (Blue Card) and have Hepatitis A & B immunisation before commencing Clinical Placements. It is recommended potential students begin Hepatitis vaccinations if required, as soon as possible to ensure timely completion. Vaccination against the following diseases is highly recommended:

  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • Influenza
  • Tuberculosis (Mantoux test and chest x-ray)
  • Varicella zoster virus (chickenpox)
  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

Confidentiality
During these placements, you may become familiar with information that is confidential to that workplace (for example financial or business affairs, personal affairs and family background of staff and clients, technical information, trade secrets, know-how, formulae, processes, ideas, and inventions). You must not divulge any confidential information that you become aware of during a placement. Breaches of confidentiality will be considered to be acts of behavioural misconduct and may result in disciplinary action.
